Welcome to my website. The website is meant to be an on-line portfolio of some of my work. It contains some, but not nearly all of my work. I have tried to put an example of every ‘type’ of painting I do on here, but if there is something that you’ve seen somewhere, and can’t find here, contact me, and I will try and find it.
There are quite a few questions I’m frequently asked. I’ll try and answer some of them. If it seems like I’m reading your mind, it’s just because I have been a professional artist for about 10 years now, and I deal directly with customers, so I have developed a feel for the questions they have.
I do a lot of commissioned work, about 60% of my paintings are commissioned. So if you want to commission a painting, go to the “Contact me” page and order one. I don’t normally charge a deposit. If it is a very big painting, or an odd size or subject, I might charge a 50% deposit, but it is definitely the exception to the rule. I sell roughly half my paintings to tourists or temporary international residents.
I sell almost all my paintings at the Rosebank Rooftop Market or at the Irene Village Market. I really like to keep my finger on the pulse of what people think of my work, and the instant feedback is not only informative, but very satisfying. I would really miss talking to customers or just fellow artists if I was a “gallery only” artist.
If you want to see my work, you can look at the “New Paintings” page, the Facebook page, or go to the Rosebank Rooftop Market every Sunday, or the Irene Village Market every second and last Sunday of the month. It is best to e-mail me first though, because I do sell out every now and then, or have a family commitment. I unfortunately don’t have a home suitable for viewing paintings, but I’ll gladly send you pics of what I have available via e-mail.
I often get asked whether I work from photographs. I would have thought that the answer to this would be an obvious YES, but apparently not. It is impossible to do work as realistic as mine from memory or from life. If there is an artist who does, he or she is more talented than I am. They are not printed or otherwise applied to the canvas. I do them the old fashioned way, sketching and then painting over the sketch. I sometimes paint at Rosebank if you are really interested in seeing me work. Irene is a little too dusty unfortunately. Photography is one of my many hobbies, and I visit the national parks often to get new reference material, and just because it is one of my favourite things ever.
I work in acrylic on canvas. I use a normal brush. Some people ask if they are airbrushed, and I always answer the same way – airbrush is much much harder than it looks, and the masking and re-masking would just take too long, and my paintings would be about four times the price. I do work in oil every now and then, and I really enjoy it, but just for a change, just another hobby in other words.
Finally, I do get asked about shipping rather often. I definitely do ship, and the packaging does not cost extra. I ship counter to counter with Speed Services, and a large three piece painting will probably be in the range of about R900 to ship to Australia or New Zealand. It is usually less than that though, because most people are closer than that to South Africa.
If you have a question I have not answered, go to the Contact Me page, and send me an e-mail from there. I usually have the PC on during the day just behind me and I’m normally very quick to respond.
